Coppercaster II Leaf & Vine
Every year I like to set aside some time from my commission work to build an instrument that will push my creative ability. To allow me to build with abandonment from time and money and amaze people with the beauty of simplicity, craftsmanship and exquisite materials. This year that guitar is the Coppercaster II. Leaf and Vine. My Tribute to the great guitar builder Leo Fender.
The Leaf and Vine design on the copper body of this guitar has been raised by an Old World technique called Chasing and Repousse. This is where you hammer the design by hand from the reverse side to raise the metal then hammer from the front to highlight the design. A time consuming art. Well worth the beauty and feel it gives in your hands. The body has been patinaed to a dark Brown then lacqued for protection.
The Neck is made from Curly Maple, with the Snake Head Headstock featuring a raised Leaf and Mattsen motif to match the Body. Tuning is via the gorgeous Gotoh 510 Delta Series Machine Heads to which I’ve added wooden knobs as they lighten the neck for balance.
Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups. Sonically and cosmetically aged to achieve the look and sound of the original 60’s pickups. The detail that Seymour Duncan go to with these pickups is incredible, impregnated with fine dust particles, vintage correct surface features, ever so slightly demagnetised, scatter wound, shows they care.
So what does it sound like? It sounds like a tele should, with heaps of Twang and sustain just how Leo would have wanted.
